Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the awareness of nursing professionalism among nurses working in comprehensive nursing service units.

Methods: Participants were eight nurses working in comprehensive units. Data were collected from October 18, 2017 to May 30, 2018 through in-depth interviews until data saturation. Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used for data analysis.

Results: In this study, awareness of nursing professionalism among nurses working in comprehensive nursing service units showed five categories consisting of ten theme clusters. These five categories were 'Identity crisis for nursing practice,' 'Conflicts from deficiency of social recognition,' 'Added pressure for patient care responsibilities,' 'Reward for quality improvement of nursing service', and 'Development of professional self-concept.'

Conclusion: Results of this study will contribute to qualitative improvement of comprehensive nursing service by providing basic data for effective management strategy development for improving nursing professionalism of nurses working in comprehensive units. Further in-depth studies are needed to determine various factors affecting nursing professionalism of nurses working in comprehensive units.
